The setting sun cast long, dancing shadows across the field, making the practice area seem like a stage. Coach Garcia felt the heat creeping up his neck, a flush of discomfort. He hated this part of coaching.

He saw the player walking toward him, the setting sun making her hair glow. He felt a strange tingling in his fingers. He had to keep it together. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself.

"Hey, Maria," he said, trying to project a calm tone. He gestured towards the bench. "Can we talk for a minute?"
