"A hamster, Leo? Really?" Chloe's voice dripped with disdain, but her eyes betrayed something else. He felt it too, that strange tingle in his fingertips, a tightening in his groin. He’d been pitching the idea all morning, envisioning a small, furry companion. Now, standing across from her, his mind was less on the hamster, and more on her.

He straightened his posture, trying to project confidence. He knew he was failing. He saw the way she was biting her lip, her gaze flitting over him. The air seemed charged with static. He felt a sudden, almost desperate urge to close the distance between them, to touch her. The tiny apartment seemed to shrink around them.

He took a step closer, inhaling deeply. He could smell her perfume, a delicate floral scent that always seemed to make his head spin. He knew he should back down, that pressing the issue now would be disastrous. But something about her resistance was doing the opposite. It was fueling the fire.

"They're low maintenance," he croaked, his voice barely a whisper. Her gaze met his, and he knew he'd lost all control.
