The email from Chloe arrived just as Maya was about to leave for her Zumba class. A beach bonfire was the plan, complete with acoustic guitars. But then there was Olivia's curated art gallery opening. A much more sophisticated event, and definitely something she knew she should go to. Maya felt a shiver ripple through her, a sudden awareness of her own skin.

She changed her mind about the gym. Instead, she wandered into her closet, running her hand along the silk scarves, inhaling their scents. She selected a flowing skirt that swirled around her legs with a life of its own.

Hours later, the sun was setting. The thought of being in such close proximity to Chloe, the way the firelight would dance on her face, sent a jolt of energy through her. The skirt felt tighter than before, clinging to her like a second skin. Maya found herself humming, a song she barely knew, a melody that mirrored the frantic beating of her heart.
