She felt a tremor in her legs as she approached him. Years had faded the sharpness of his features, but his eyes, a startling green, remained etched in her memory. "Mark?" she asked, the name a hesitant whisper. He turned, and a smile bloomed on his face, a sight that made her stomach clench.

“Lisa! Wow, it’s been a while.” His smile was wide, and the easy familiarity in his tone, his hands gesturing, the way he leaned in, made her feel a sudden, intense warmth.

“It has,” she replied, her voice catching slightly. She watched his eyes, searching for some sign of recognition, but he looked curious, not remembering her. "Do you remember the… the summer we built the fort?" she asked, her pulse quickening.

He blinked, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. "Fort? I don't recall that, I'm sorry." The heat that had started at her chest spread further down, a sensation that left her wanting to sit down, or move, to be anywhere other than where she was. She gripped the strap of her bag, her knuckles white.
