He saw her across the crowded street, the same wild curls, the same impish grin he’d loved as a boy. A slow smile spread across his face, and he crossed the street, oblivious to the blaring horns, the sudden shouts of the cab drivers.

"Chloe?" he called out, his voice hoarse with a mix of anticipation and…something else. She turned, and the smile faded from her face.

"Do I know you?" she asked, her brow furrowed. The feeling in his gut suddenly tightened. He felt it in the pit of his stomach.

"It's David," he managed, trying to keep his voice steady. He reached out, then pulled his hand back, as if burned. He felt a strange sort of tightness in his chest.

"David…" she repeated, searching her memory. "Sorry, doesn't ring a bell." A wave of dizziness washed over him, a disorienting sensation that left him craving escape.
