He saw her across the crowded train platform, her familiar smile and her bright, sparkling eyes. A strange sense of excitement, an energy he couldn’t contain, surged through his body. He approached her, a nervous energy making his palms clammy. “Ava?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly. Her gaze met his, and he felt his heart plummet. Her eyes held no recognition, only polite indifference.

“Yes?” she replied, her voice a melodious sound, and his breath hitched. He felt it in his core, the shock.

“It’s… Noah,” he managed, the words a struggle. “We… used to trade baseball cards.” He could feel the blood pounding in his ears.

She frowned slightly. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I know you, Noah.” The words hit him like a physical blow. He wanted to scream. He wanted to run. He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat, a desire to do… something.
