From the back of the dive bar, Maya watched him. She knew this song, her song, intimately. But the stranger on stage, a biker with a surprising gentle rasp to his voice, was giving it new life. “Devil’s Kiss” was his, too, now. She felt a lightness in her chest, a strange pull.

She found herself tracing a finger along the rim of her beer glass, the cool glass offering some respite to the growing heat. The way he delivered the spoken-word section, with such conviction...She ran her tongue over her lips.

He caught her eye. She looked away, a playful smile playing on her lips. She wanted to scream out, to tell him how good he was. Instead, she took a long swig of her beer.
