Gemotions

The attic air was thick with dust and the ghosts of forgotten summers. Sarah crouched, the flashlight beam dancing across a trunk overflowing with relics. A faded blue envelope caught her eye. It was addressed to “My Dearest David,” in her youthful, looping script. He’d been her high school sweetheart. She opened it, fingers trembling a little.

Inside, the letter began with soaring declarations of love and longing. Sarah ran a hand over her own chest, feeling a quickening of her breath. A blush warmed her cheeks as she read her younger self's impassioned words.

She imagined David’s face as he would’ve read this. A giggle escaped her lips, quickly followed by a sharper intake of air. She could almost feel the phantom touch of his hand on her skin as she scanned the words, lost in the memory of shared glances and stolen kisses. The dusty attic seemed to shrink, the past drawing her in.
