The news sliced through Mark's morning like a hot knife. A wave of heat washed over him, a tingling sensation starting at his toes and quickly spreading upwards. He found himself tapping his foot beneath the desk, a restless beat against the carpet. He tried to focus on his work, but the words swam before his eyes.

He re-read the email, his eyes lingering on the names of the acquiring company. What would this mean for his department? For his career? For… everything? He chuckled, an odd sound that came out of him.

He pushed his chair back from the desk, standing up to pace. The office felt small, constricting. He needed space, air, something. He felt like he had to *do* something.
