"Professor Dubois is… leaving?" Emily’s voice was a breathy whisper. Her hands, usually steady, trembled slightly as she clutched the email printout. A flush crept up her neck, making her ears burn. The air in the coffee shop felt thick, almost suffocating. She felt a lightness in her head, as if she could float away.

She took a shaky sip of her latte, the bitter taste doing nothing to ground her. She stared out the window, at the bustling street scene, the images blurring slightly. She felt an overwhelming urge to… to do *something*. She drummed her fingers on the table, a restless energy coursing through her.
