The tiny, perfectly formed clay figures filled the display case. Thomas, a master craftsman of miniature pottery, felt a familiar pull in his chest when his daughter, Maya, brought them to life with her own hands. He’d taught her everything he knew, the way the clay should feel, the importance of pressure, the patience to fire and glaze. He could feel it in her touch too. He watched the girl with a certain energy, like electricity, crackling beneath his skin.

He caught her eyes. Her smile was a mirror of his own, and he felt a knot form in his throat. “They’re beautiful, Maya. Really beautiful.” He had to force the words out.
