The meeting was adjourned. Everyone filtered out, chattering about the new quarterly sales figures. Only she and Ryan, her rival for the position, remained. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to buzz louder, reflecting in his eyes.

She felt a rush of adrenaline. Her hands were clammy. This was the moment. He reached out to grab his briefcase, and his fingers brushed hers, barely. A jolt, like static, coursed through her arm, leaving her breathless.

She was suddenly acutely aware of the curve of his cheek, the way his jaw tensed when he was concentrating. She cleared her throat, her voice barely a whisper. All she wanted was to be in the same space as him, no matter what it took.
