The fluorescent lights of the breakroom seemed to hum, a low thrumming that resonated in Leo's chest. He'd just been explaining to Sarah about his childhood summers, the campfires, the canoe trips. Her eyes had widened when he mentioned Camp Clearwater, the same one she’d attended. A flush crept up her neck, mirroring the heat that was suddenly prickling his own skin.

“No way,” she’d said, her voice a little breathless. They stood close, leaning against the chipped countertop. The air smelled of stale coffee and something… else. Something exciting, new.

He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. He remembered the lake, the way the sun reflected off the water. Sarah's laugh echoed in his memory, vivid and real. He found himself wanting to reach out, to brush a stray strand of hair from her cheek, but his hand wouldn't obey. His pulse hammered in his ears.

He finally managed to chuckle, and stepped back. "Small world, huh?" The words felt inadequate, hollow.
