The phone call ended, and Sarah felt a sudden hollowness, yet also a tightening deep inside. Across the country. For a whole year? She slumped back against the kitchen counter, the cool tile doing little to soothe her. The casual way Chloe had dropped the news, as if it were a weather report, was baffling. She wanted to scream.

She started pacing, her hands running through her hair. The familiar kitchen, usually a comfort, felt strangely unfamiliar. Everything seemed sharper, more defined. She pictured Chloe, her eyes sparkling with excitement, describing her new life. The imagined image, the remembered scent of Chloe's perfume, had a physical effect.
