He leaned back in his chair, the office chair squeaking in protest. His best friend, David, was leaving. The news had dropped, like a sudden stone. The sterile office air felt suddenly stifling, constricting. He could barely breathe.

He imagined David, his smile, his voice. The thought of never seeing him again, of all the shared jokes and late-night talks they wouldn't have… his gut twisted. He had a sudden urge to feel David's touch, to feel the comfort of his presence.

He abruptly stood up and began pacing the small office, his movements frantic. He needed to get out, to move, to *do* something to stop the pressure building inside. He needed to make David stay.
