"An apology? After all this time?" Clara chuckled, the sound brittle, unnatural. The letter, delivered by courier, felt almost obscene in its pristine neatness. She tossed it onto the ornate coffee table, the gesture careless, defiant.

She paced her living room, her silk robe swirling around her ankles. Her eyes darted from one piece of antique furniture to another. The room felt suddenly too small, too suffocating. She couldn't sit still.

Her body felt like it was humming. The past had always held a charge, and now that the charge was activated. The air in her lungs felt heavy, and her skin tingled. The heat was real. She grabbed a fan and turned it to full speed.
