"No," Clara breathed, the word a mere whisper. The sun, a harsh glare in her eyes, seemed to intensify the heat that suddenly flooded her system. A tingling, restless energy began to prickle through her, centered around her core. She’d always loved this tree, the way its branches reached for the sky.

Now, a gaping void was left. She wanted to scream. Instead, she wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically contain the turmoil within. She felt a throbbing sensation low in her belly, a need she couldn't interpret. She took a shuddering breath, the air tasting thick and charged. She wanted, desperately, to feel something solid, to ground herself. Her gaze dropped to the ground, fixated on the raw, open wound where the tree once stood.
