The sun had set, and the house was cloaked in darkness. Jessica shivered, though the temperature in the house was mild. She had been shocked at the details in the police report. The previous residents, a young couple, had been found dead in the attic. Murder-suicide, the report concluded.

She lit a cigarette, the flame of the lighter reflecting in her wide eyes. The thought of the attic, of what had transpired there, sent a tingling sensation down her spine. The house, usually so comforting, now held a new, dark allure.

She climbed the stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs. The attic door creaked open, revealing a dusty, claustrophobic space. She stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of forgotten things. The dark space filled her with a feeling of anticipation. She inhaled deeply.
