He was supposed to be at the office. But Michael, restless, feeling a vague dissatisfaction he couldn’t name, had come home early. He found the envelope tucked behind a pile of neatly folded sweaters in the guest room. The return address was unfamiliar: "First National."

His heart hammered against his ribs as he pulled out the statement. His wife, Jessica, was usually so open, so transparent. But this... this was hidden, private. A large sum. He felt a burgeoning exhilaration, a need to pace the room.

He closed the door and turned back, his gaze falling upon the bed. A wave of heat washed over him and he thought of her, her body, her voice… he had to know. The thrill of discovery was intoxicating. He felt a compulsion to find out how Jessica had gotten so much money.
