"Did you see the new chandelier?" Mark, his voice hushed, whispered to his wife, Emily, across the breakfast table. They had a direct view of the Van Derlyn’s dining room, and last night, the house had been ablaze with lights. Emily's fingers tightened around her coffee cup. The Van Derlyns had always been polite, but they'd kept their distance.

Mark continued, detailing the expensive food and expensive music. A heat prickled at the back of Emily’s neck. They were clearly of a different world. It was a world she yearned to visit.

Later that day, she found herself lingering in front of her window, her gaze fixed on the Van Derlyn's home. A strange, insistent feeling thrummed through her.
