She'd always known the Smiths were… comfortable. But the new swimming pool, the size of a small lake, sent a jolt through her. Her own small, above-ground pool suddenly seemed pathetic. Her jaw tightened, and she could feel a flush creeping up her neck.

She found herself making excuses to walk past the Smiths' house. The scent of chlorine and expensive sunscreen hung in the air.

One afternoon, she saw Mrs. Smith, tanned and relaxed, lounging by the pool. A ripple of something went through her. It was a sensation she couldn't quite explain. Her eyes lingered on the scene, a mix of fascination and longing twisting in her gut.
