“They’re closing it down,” he mumbled, the words sticking in his throat. David stared at the computer screen, the words of the announcement burning into his vision. His tiny college, which had been his entire world for the last four years, was no more. An odd sensation crept through him.

He pushed his chair back from his desk, the abrupt movement jarring. He felt restless, suddenly unable to sit still. He rose, pacing back and forth in his small dorm room. His hands kept clenching and unclenching.

He needed to get out. He wanted to scream. He reached for his jacket, a sudden urgency pulling at him. The campus, once familiar and comforting, now felt electric, charged with a strange, bittersweet energy.
