The doorbell chimed, a cheerful sound that felt at odds with the humid afternoon. Clara, freshly showered and still slick with water, padded to the door wrapped in a towel. On the porch, a florist's delivery man beamed, holding a vibrant bouquet of lilies. No card. Just the scent of the flowers and the knowledge that someone, somewhere, had sent them.

Her fingers traced the smooth petals, a flush creeping up her neck. A sigh escaped her lips as she closed the door, leaning back against it. The air in her small apartment seemed to thicken, a palpable weight pressing against her skin.

She set the flowers in the center of the kitchen table, their fragrance a potent aphrodisiac in the otherwise plain space. The sunlight caught the water droplets on the stems, turning them into tiny jewels.

She found herself, much later, meticulously arranging the lilies, plucking out the imperfect blooms. The silence was deafening, the quiet punctuated only by the hammering of her own heart. She pulled the blinds closed, plunging the apartment into a soft, diffused light.
