The clatter of tools and the smell of freshly turned earth drew her outside. She saw Mr. Jensen, shirtless, muscles straining as he worked. He looked up, a hesitant smile on his face. "Hey, could I borrow some of your topsoil for my garden?"

Her heart skipped a beat, then hammered against her ribs. She felt a sudden, inexplicable tightening in her stomach. Her breath hitched. She imagined his hands, strong and capable, working the soil.

She fought to keep her voice steady. "Sure," she said, managing to look him in the eye for only a fleeting moment. "Take as much as you need." A thrill coursed through her, leaving her suddenly restless.
