The U-Haul truck loomed in the driveway, a hulking metal beast against the backdrop of her childhood home. Her mother, bless her heart, was practically skipping around the front yard, waving a welcome sign she'd clearly crafted herself. Amelia, however, felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. She avoided her mother's gaze, busying herself with unloading the boxes, each one a testament to her failure.

The scent of freshly baked bread wafted from the open kitchen window, a smell that usually evoked comfort. Today, it just made her feel…wrong.

"Honey, let me help with those," her father said, his voice laced with forced cheerfulness. She mumbled a refusal, wanting to appear self-sufficient, even though her face was burning up.

Later, huddled in her old bedroom, now repainted a nauseating shade of lavender, she stared at the cracked ceiling, the echoes of her younger self mocking her. The weight of her past, of her current circumstance, pressed down on her.
