The dusty, worn cleats felt foreign on his feet. He stared out at the sprawling baseball diamond, the vast expanse mirroring the emptiness he felt inside. After three seasons of being a catcher, he’d been told to try shortstop. He felt the stares of his teammates, the subtle shifts in their attitudes. He thought of his grandfather's proud words about his grandson behind the plate. The man loved the game, and would have been so disappointed to see him here now. He longed for the familiar comfort of his old position, but it was out of reach.
