The silence in the room was almost tangible. Michael stared out the window, at the setting sun, its colors reflecting the vibrant energy of his colleague, Sam. Sam had the job, of course.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. He had to get away from these well-wishers and congratulations.

He couldn’t bring himself to look at Sam, could barely manage a nod. He felt like his own shadow had abandoned him. He walked away from the celebration slowly, feeling each step a burden, a reminder of his own perceived failings.
