Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Maya. She wrapped her hands around the warm mug, the heat doing little to soothe the cold spreading through her. She had been clumsy that day, spilling her drink, dropping her keys. Her hands were shaking. Across the table, her husband, David, chatted amiably, oblivious. The memory of the way he’d stiffened when she’d accidentally picked up his phone, the way he’d rushed to snatch it away, haunted her. She knew, somehow, that this was the beginning of an ending, and it was her own fault for seeing it.
