"Are you all right, honey?" Her voice was laced with concern, but even to her, he sounded as though he had committed a crime. The dinner they'd made together sat untouched on the table. He picked at his food, pushing the peas around his plate. He hadn't been able to meet her gaze since he'd noticed the way she’d hurried outside, the closed door, the private conversation. He felt like an intruder, an unworthy trespasser in a life he thought they'd built together. He wanted to confess everything, but the words were trapped, lodging in his throat like a physical obstruction.
