The knot in Eleanor’s stomach tightened with each step she took towards her house. Her head throbbed. The vacant patch of gravel, where her pristine BMW had been parked, seemed to mock her. She hadn't been able to make the payments. She had deluded herself into thinking she could get away with it, that no one would notice.

She saw Mrs. Gable across the street, watering her petunias, a sympathetic look on her face. Eleanor ducked her head, avoiding eye contact. The shame was a physical weight, pressing down on her shoulders, making her want to disappear. Inside, the phone rang, the automated voice on the other end confirming the inevitable.
