The small, cluttered office smelled of old paper and dust. He felt himself shrinking.

The transfer had been a result of “restructuring,” but he knew the truth. He'd been demoted. His accomplishments from the past were now meaningless.

He’d always taken pride in his work. He’d been a leader. Now, he was just another cog in the machine. He tried to focus on his tasks, but his hands trembled.

He found himself looking at the framed photos on his desk. He found that he could no longer bear to look at the reminders of his past successes.
