The coffee cup trembled in Sofia's hand, the lukewarm liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. It was a simple phrase, “¿Cómo estás, cariño?” – How are you, darling? – that betrayed Marco. He’d spoken it while putting on his shoes, his usual morning routine, but the inflection… It was perfect. A perfect echo of her own mother's voice. Sofia felt a strange pressure building behind her eyes. She put the cup down, the sudden clatter echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. She knew, then, that she wouldn't be able to look him in the eye all day.
