The realtor had said the house was “full of surprises.” Now, Emily regretted buying it so quickly. The house was not surprising in any pleasant way. The hidden room, revealed by a loose brick in the basement, felt like a judgment. She shouldn't have been so impulsive, so desperate to escape her old life.

She crouched on the dusty floor, tracing the outline of the hidden doorway with a trembling finger. The thought of what she might find inside – a forgotten treasure? A sinister secret? – made her want to retreat back upstairs. Her shoulders slumped.
