Gemotions

The park was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. David felt the knot in his stomach tighten as he watched Maria walk towards him. He knew what she was going to say. He’d seen the look on Emily's face, too, just hours earlier. That same crestfallen expression. That same pain.

His hands were clammy, and he wiped them surreptitiously on his jeans. He hadn't meant for it to happen, he kept repeating internally. He hated the way Maria’s face fell when she finally stopped in front of him. He struggled for an explanation that wouldn't make the situation worse, but none came.

"I…" he began, his voice barely a whisper.
