He’d left it open, that much was clear. The dog-eared page, the way the spine was slightly cracked. Sarah felt the color drain from her face as she walked into the room. A tremor ran through her, leaving her suddenly cold. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, but all she saw was the evidence.

Her roommate, Chloe, was sprawled on the bed, scrolling through her phone, acting as if nothing was wrong. Sarah couldn’t bring herself to speak.

She gathered her books, her movements jerky and uncoordinated. She just needed to leave, to get away from the accusing silence.

Chloe finally looked up, her expression innocent. "Oh, hey, Sarah! How was your day?"
