The package arrived just as Maya was about to leave for her pottery class. Her stomach clenched. It was addressed to "Mr. Reynolds," the man who’d left behind a mountain of clutter and a trail of broken promises. The box was heavy. She felt the urge to throw it into the trash can.

She carried the package up the stairs and sat it down on the kitchen counter. It wasn't the weight, she thought. She knew what was inside. It was the same kiln he'd promised to give her. She put it in the spare room.
