"This isn't my fault," David mumbled under his breath, watching Buster trot back and forth, happily surveying the damage. The fence was old, and he'd meant to replace it for months. The truth, however, was that he was lazy.

He saw Mr. Collins, his next door neighbor, watching him from his porch. He pretended to busy himself with his phone, avoiding eye contact. He knew Mr. Collins was a stickler for rules, a pillar of the neighborhood.

He felt the knot in his stomach tighten as he imagined the scathing look Mr. Collins probably had on his face. He felt like a disappointment.
