The vibrant colors of the campus, the bustling energy of the students – they all felt distorted, out of sync with his own bleak inner state. He felt as though he were walking through a funhouse, everything slightly warped, slightly wrong. He considered transferring, dropping out, disappearing altogether. He wouldn't look his friends in the eye.

He became withdrawn and irritable, snapping at the people he cared about. His grades began to suffer. Sleep became difficult, plagued by nightmares of being exposed. He felt constantly on edge, the smallest sound making him jump. He avoided the activities he used to love. The joy had departed, replaced by a hollow emptiness.
