“Congratulations, you’ve reached the final round!” He remembered the email, the thrilling words, the excitement that had buzzed through his veins. Now, that same email felt like a cruel joke. He had spent so long building himself up, so long believing he was capable of this.

He started avoiding his favorite cafe, the place where he had done most of his writing. He couldn’t go there. He couldn't face the friendly barista, the familiar faces. He felt too exposed.

He locked himself in his room. The familiar comfort of his own space had become a prison.
