She'd bragged to her friends, she'd announced it to everyone who would listen. Her novel, finally, would be a published work. The contract had seemed so real. Now, a simple email was a wrecking ball.

She had to go to the grocery store. Walking down the aisle, she avoided eye contact with her neighbors. She knew they were expecting to talk about the book. She needed to quickly grab a few things and get out.

She had to remind herself to breathe. The world was suddenly too bright, too loud.
