He’d been trying to text Sarah, his new girlfriend, a silly meme about cats. Instead, it went to his mother. He stared at the blue checkmarks, their innocent confirmation of delivery, and felt a cold dread creep up his spine.

The blood drained from his face as he imagined her inevitable phone call. He pictured her gentle voice, laced with concern, asking if he was feeling alright, then, after a pregnant pause, a pointed, “And who is this… Sarah?”

He immediately powered off his phone. Maybe if he ignored it long enough, the whole thing would just… disappear. He sat down heavily on the couch, unable to bring himself to eat the dinner he’d just prepared.
