The hum of the emergency lights seemed to bore into Peter's skull. He remembered the details of the incident. He was the one who crashed the car, and it had been his fault. His supervisor, Karen, was also in the elevator.

The small space felt suffocating. He kept replaying the scene in his mind, the screech of tires, the impact. Karen's face was unreadable. She hadn't said a word.

His hands were clammy. He wanted the earth to swallow him whole. He felt every stare as a judgement. He would have to face the consequences, and he knew they wouldn't be pretty.
