The office air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that did nothing to soothe the tension in Grace. She clutched the letter, the paper crinkling in her grasp. It was from Sarah, the woman she'd undermined for a promotion, the woman she'd left hanging.

She swiveled in her chair, the leather creaking in protest. The city skyline, usually a source of comfort, appeared bleak and distant. Her throat felt constricted.

She wanted to call her lawyer, to explain how she was finally exposed. Instead, she stared out the window, a dull ache blooming in her chest, the consequences of a youthful transgression finally catching up to her.
