The musty smell of the old house clung to Eleanor like a shroud. Her brother, Thomas, strode through the echoing hallway with a triumphant grin, brandishing a deed. A vineyard in Tuscany. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach, a bitter taste rising in her throat. He'd always been the golden child, the one their father favored.

"Look at this!" Thomas boomed, tossing the paper onto the mahogany table. "Our inheritance! Isn't it wonderful?" Eleanor forced a smile, her hands clenching at her sides.

She turned away, pretending to examine a faded portrait of their grandmother. A small, wooden box sat on a side table. It was intricately carved and locked. Eleanor knew what was inside. She knew her father had loved her, too, in his own way. But now, it was just her turn.

The box contained a series of handwritten letters, detailing her father's secret life as a struggling artist. His dreams, his fears, his disappointments. She’d known her father was something different, but now it was all in a box. Her legacy.
