The auction house was alive with murmurs and excited chatter. Her brother, George, moved with practiced ease amongst the wealthy bidders, a man of wealth, a man of power. A priceless art collection. His sister, Olivia, beamed at his success.

She felt a wave of nausea. She stared at the worn, leather-bound journal she’d been given. The lawyer seemed to find it a bit odd, though he masked his disapproval well.

Her father’s detailed diaries, filled with his innermost thoughts, his insecurities, his struggles. She didn’t know what to do with any of it. She felt the weight of her own inadequacy. He'd always been so careful to keep his secrets. Now they were hers.

She was so embarrassed. She felt the heat creeping up her neck and down her chest. It was impossible to breathe.
