The email sat in Eleanor’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the muted colors of her desktop. She clicked it open, her fingers feeling clumsy, her breath catching in her throat. The subject line, “Regarding Your Father,” seemed to vibrate. The sender, a lawyer, spoke of DNA tests and a previously unknown family member. A sister. Someone she'd never known, who lived just a few towns over.

Her hand trembled as she closed the laptop. The sudden tightness in her chest felt like a vise. She found herself rearranging the meticulously organized spice rack in her kitchen, straightening the jars until they were perfectly aligned, a task she normally found soothing. Today, it only intensified the feeling of unease.

She considered calling her mother, but the thought brought a wave of nausea. The lies, the secrets, the carefully constructed facade of their perfect family—all of it seemed to crumble under the weight of this new information. She went to the bathroom, and stared at herself in the mirror. The way her face had always been, she realized, was a lie.
