David received a text, a simple message with a link. He clicked it, and a profile appeared on his screen. A woman, his half-sister, living in another state. The image of the woman, her smile, the way she held her head, all reminded him of his father. He felt as though someone had punched him in the stomach.

He threw his phone across the room. He turned away from the mess, but as always, his mind found the same looping path. He’d always felt like his father was the perfect man. Now, he felt as though he was a fool for ever believing it.

He sat on the floor, staring at the ceiling. The ceiling had been his constant, in his apartment, in his life. Now, it had lost its familiarity, its steadiness. He got to his feet, and began to pace.
