The doctor's office seemed to shrink. I had just heard Dr. Ramirez explain the new study. His study. My study. The color drained from my face, a coldness spreading through my limbs. I felt a strange sense of detachment from my own body.

I focused on the patterned linoleum floor, avoiding eye contact with anyone. I tried to control my breathing, which was suddenly shallow and rapid.

When Dr. Ramirez turned to me, I simply gave a weak smile and a quick nod, then mumbled some congratulations. The words felt foreign. I quickly exited the room, needing to be alone. I struggled with the sudden, uncomfortable lightness in my chest.
