The attic was a labyrinth of forgotten memories. "Learn to speak Italian." The list, tucked into a dusty travel guide, stared back at her. Her mother had always loved Italy. She'd tried to teach her a few phrases, but Sarah had been dismissive, too young and too self-absorbed. She'd never been interested.

She sank to the floor, the weight of her indifference suddenly crushing. She’d always been so focused on herself, on what she wanted. The thought of the missed opportunities, of the lost connection, left a bitter taste in her mouth. She wanted to scream.
