Gemotions

The paper felt heavy in Maya’s hands. She hadn't even glanced at the grade yet, but the way her professor held it out, a slight grimace on his face, spoke volumes. A knot formed in her stomach, tightening with each passing second. She finally looked down: a D. Her cheeks burned. She mumbled a thank you and scurried out of the classroom, avoiding eye contact with anyone. The walk back to the dorm was a blur.

Back in her room, she tossed the paper onto her desk, the harsh red ink mocking her. She pulled the covers over her head, wanting to disappear. The feeling of being watched, judged, followed her into the darkness, making it impossible to relax. She stayed there, curled up, until dinner.
